In 1855, the leading wine experts in Bordeaux created a five tier ranking hierarchy for the leading chateaux in the Medoc appellation. This was based on the market value of the wines at that time. Since 1855, there has only been one change to the classification, which saw the elevation of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild to Premier Cru Classes in 1973. To this day, the classification of the Bordeaux wines remains surprisingly accurate.
Over the past 25 years, an informal grouping known as "Super-Seconds" has emerged. This classification is for the chateaux whose wines can, on occasion, approach or match the quality of the Premier Crus Classes. These chateaux include both Pichons, Lynch-Bages, Léoville-Las-Cases and Barton, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Cos, Montrose and Palmer. Please note: The term Premier Cru is sometimes used incorrectly as a generic term to group together the leading chateaux in Bordeaux - Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau Cheval-Blanc, Chateau Petrus, Chateau Yquem and Chateau Ausone.
